Uncharted the movie: Release date, screenplay, Tom Holland ... we take stock

Adaptations to the cinema or to television of video games, there have been some and not always good ones. Often taking the form of live action, rare are the times when the result has won over the public. Examples are legion, from Assassin's Creed to Mortal Kombat to Resident Evil. But maybe that will change. Release date, script, casting… the editorial staff of JV takes stock of the film Uncharted.

WHAT IS UNCHARTED?

Uncharted is a video game series born in 2007 with the opus Drake's Fortune. It is signed Naughty Dog, American studio behind The Last of Us and Crash Bandicoot. For most of these action / adventure apps, the starting point is the same. You play as Nathan Drake, a seasoned explorer set out in search of hidden wonders around the globe. From El Dorado to the lost city of Quivira, the Indiana Jones of the video game scene has shown us the country and especially beautiful panoramas. These games never cease to make us discover paradisiacal settings, while eliminating a thousand and one mercenaries in the pay of a crooked antagonist, that goes without saying. Currently, there are 7 titles in the license (except remaster, or the Collection to come), and soon a live action film.

WHAT IS THE RELEASE DATE OF THE UNCHARTED FILM?

The film Uncharted had a very chaotic production. To fully understand the magnitude of the thing, we have to go back to 2010. At the time, director David O. Russell was in charge of adapting the screenplay for the first opus into a feature film. Names are then mentioned, from Nathan Fillion to Mark Wahlberg for the lead role, but the rumors are denied, and Russell leaves the project. The site was then put back on its feet in 2014 by Seth Gordon, before collapsing again due to a lack of budget issued by Sony. Subsequently, it is not one, not two, but three directors who will give up the idea of shooting the film.

In the end, Ruben Fleischer will be the lucky winner, after a waltz of changes that lasted no less than 10 years. Knowing that the script has also undergone a number of modifications, even if it remained less accentuated. Once the team has been appointed once and for all, the final casting was announced, which we will come back to below. It only remained to unveil the release date and, after many postponements, it was revealed. The film is due on February 11, 2022 in the United States and 5 days later in France.

HOW TO SEE THE UNCHARTED FILM IN FRANCE?

In France, the film Uncharted will arrive in theaters on February 16, 2022. You are probably aware that the license belongs to Sony. But you may not be aware of the deal signed in April 2021 between the multimedia giant, Netflix and The Walt Disney Company. Without going into details, it allows all Sony Pictures films, released between 2022 and 2026, to integrate as a priority the catalog of the on-demand service platform after their appearances on the big screen. Without knowing exactly how long it will take, we can be sure to find Nathan Drake's twists and turns on Netflix in 2022.

HOW DOES THE UNCHARTED FILM FIT INTO SAGA?

The film was initially presented as a prequel to the history of games, that is to say taking place before. However, with the first official trailer, we had been able to see many memorable scenes from the games, like those of the cargo plane of 3 or the pirate ship in 4. Are we dealing with a mixture of all these scenes on the background? unpublished history? This is what it would seem and it would at the same time serve as a tribute to great passages of the franchise. This would delight fans without playing the card of ease by serving as a simple adaptation of one of the adventures of the treasure hunter.

WHAT IS THE SCREENPLAY OF THE UNCHARTED FILM?

This film adaptation stages the first adventures of our protagonists. Without knowing exactly how long between the film and the first game, if it turns out to be a prequel, we can still estimate a rather large gap. Either way, the story sees Nathan Drake and his friend Victor Sullivan set out in search of the greatest treasure of all time. It is the promise of an impossible to miss jackpot for the adventurer in the making.

At the same time, he'll follow clues presumably left behind by his missing brother Samuel Drake, with the hope of finding him. Already, we can feel the influence of the scenarios of the games in the series. It remains to be seen whether the writers intend to stand out or not from the main lines of the history of some of these titles, in particular A Thief's End from which it seems to be inspired.

WHAT IS CASTING? FOR WHICH CHARACTERS?

Rumors about potential actors for our heroes have been rife. Ultimately, actor Tom Holland was chosen to play this younger version of Nate. The comedian is not his first attempt in terms of big roles to take, since he embodies the naive and courageous Spider-Man of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). At his side, we find Mark Wahlberg in the skin of Victor Sullivan, friend of the hero and peerless pilot, while Antonio Banderas plays the antagonist. Little information has been revealed to date as to the restof the cast, except Sophia Taylor Ali for Chloe Frazer. Will there be the presence of Elena, Sam or other famous villains? Nothing is less sure.

WHO DIRECTS AND SCREWS THE UNCHARTED FILM

Above, we were talking about the round of directors who left the project along the way. The last "survivor", the one who ended up winning the jackpot, is Ruben Fleischer (Welcome to Zombieland, Venom). On the writing side, we find a well-known duo from Marvel Studios, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man, Punisher: War Zone).

One is entitled to wonder if the creator of the franchise, Neil Druckmann, will not intervene in some way. After all, he will help write the script for some episodes of The Last of Us series, another of his licenses. Well, despite the fact that he was seen on the set, everything seems to suggest that he is not supervising anything. He seems at best to have stopped by to see the state of the shooting to get an idea of the final result.

WHO IS WORKING ON THE UNCHARTED FILM?

Uncharted is above all action, adventure, explosions, sumptuous settings, well in short, spectacular. Therefore, artistic direction worthy of the name is expected, just like photography and sets. These responsibilities were respectively placed in the hands of David Ingram (Nightflyers), Chung-hoon Chung (Miss, Return to Zombieland), Elli Griff (The others, Edge of Tomorrow) and finally, Kata Bartyik (Dune, The King).

MICROSOFT AND SEGA FORM A "STRATEGIC ALLIANCE" AROUND THE CLOUD

Switch, Microsoft x Sega, Take-Two ... the business news of the week

Last May, Sega presented its shareholders with a new initiative called "Super Game". A project still unclear for the moment, knowing that nothing concrete is expected on the market before the 2025/2026 financial year, but which is particularly ambitious. And to help it achieve its goals, the Japanese publisher can count on the help of Microsoft. The two firms have reached an agreement in principle for a strategic alliance that will allow Sega to rely on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform to "produce world-class games in a next-generation development environment". Sega doesn't say more, but does share some keywords like "global", "online", "community", and "license usage". Remember that Sega has already used Microsoft's Azure servers to host the western version of the online game Phantasy Star Online 2, available only on PC and Xbox.

We are very pleased to announce today that we are considering a strategic alliance with Microsoft to help develop Sega's new Super Game initiative as well as to build a next-generation game development environment. By considering a strategic partnership with Microsoft, we seek to advance the development of our games so that our titles can be enjoyed by fans around the world. In this regard, we want to build an alliance that utilizes both Sega's powerful game development capabilities and Microsoft's cutting-edge development technology and environment. Yukio Sugino, President and COO at Sega Corporation.

Sega has played such an iconic role in the gaming industry and has been a great partner over the years. We look forward to working together as they explore new ways to create unique gaming experiences for the future using Microsoft's cloud technologies. Together, we'll reimagine the way games are created, hosted and operated, with the goal of adding more value to gamers and Sega. Sarah Bond, vice president at Microsoft Corporation.

ACTIVISION BLIZZARD EXCEEDS ITS FORECASTS, BUT PUSHES DIABLO 4 AND OVERWATCH 2

Switch, Microsoft x Sega, Take-Two ... the business news of the week

The recent departures from Activision Blizzard, amid accusations of harassment and discrimination, are not without consequences for the business of the company. On the occasion of its quarterly report, the American firm announced that Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 will be released "later than initially planned" on its internal roadmap. A priori, we should not therefore wait for them before 2023 at least. Despite these postponements, Blizzard still promises to release "a significant dose of content" next year. The mobile game Diablo Immortal is still scheduled for the first half of 2022.

It should be remembered that in recent months, Overwatch 2 has seen its emblematic director Jeff Kaplan as well as its production manager Chacko Sonny leave, while Diablo 4 has lost its director Luis Barriga (replaced in October by Joe Shely). And the departures don't end there as Blizzard co-chair Jen Oneal has announced her resignation, leaving Mike Ybarra to run the studio on his own. The duo had been propelled to the head of operations only three months ago after the forced departure of J. Allen Brack. In a press release, Jen Oneal explains that she will be fully committed to the Women In Games International association, which aims to guarantee equality and diversity in the video game industry.

Despite these setbacks, Activision Blizzard is heading for another record year on the financial front. The firm achieved a third quarter above expectations, with 1.7 billion euros in sales and 551 million euros in net profit. With 245 million active users, King (Candy Crush) increased its turnover by 22% to reach its new record: 562 million euros. Driven by the Call of Duty ecosystem, Activision records 119 million active users and 553 million euros in turnover. Finally, Blizzard was able to count on the launch of Diablo II: Resurrected to increase its turnover by 20% to 425 million euros, but the number of active users is down (again) by 13% and thus drops to 26 million.

Nintendo has unveiled its financial results for its first fiscal semester, running from April to September 2021. The figures are logically down compared to last year's record financial year, which benefited from the containment effect and the launch Animal Crossing New Horizons, but they remain at remarkable levels: 4.7 billion euros in turnover and 1.3 billion in net profit. The Kyoto firm is well on its way to having its second best fiscal year since the launch of the Switch in March 2017, with total expected turnover of 12 billion euros and net profit of 2.6 billion euros. euros. The builder recalls the upcoming release of headlines like Pokémon Sparkling Diamond / Sparkling Pearl (November 19), Pokémon Legends: Arceus (January 28, 2022), Kirby and the Forgotten World (Spring 2022), Splatoon 3 (2022), Bayonetta 3 ( 2022), Mario + The Raving Rabbids Sparks of Hope (2022) and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (2022).

Nintendo sold 8.28 million Switch over the semester, against 12.53 million in the same period in 2020. The manufacturer explains that the shortage of semiconductors prevents it from producing as many consoles as expected. Its goal is now to distribute 24 million Switch over the entire fiscal year (April 2021 to March 2022) instead of 25.5 million for the previous goal, which remains particularly high and above the best years. from any PlayStation console. As of September 30, 2021, Nintendo has distributed 92.87 million Switches worldwide, including 16.5 million Switch Lite. It remains ahead of the Wii and the PS4, but behind the Nintendo DS, over an equivalent period of marketing. As for the number of Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, it stands at 32 million.

On the game sales side, the top 10 is not moving. With its 38.74 million copies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains at the top and exceeds the sales of Mario Kart Wii (37.38 million). Above all, it becomes the best-selling game in Nintendo history, if we exclude Wii Sports (82.9 million) and Super Mario Bros. (40.24 million) which were mostly supplied with their console. We also discover the first sales figures of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, New Pokémon Snap and Mario Golf: Super Rush, respectively sold to 3.60 million, 2.19 million and 1.94 million copies. Note that New Pokémon Snap is not distributed by Nintendo in Japan, but by The Pokémon Company, and that the figures for this territory are therefore missing.

Finally, we can note that 93.89 million Switch games were sold between April and September 2021 (against 100.25 million last year), of which 70% Nintendo games (82% last year) and 45% download (47% last year), for a total of 681 million.

TAKE-TWO: CONTRACTED RESULTS, CANCELLATION AND POSTPONEMENT

Switch, Microsoft x Sega, Take-Two ... the business news of the week

On the Take-Two Interactive side, it is the results of the July-September 2021 quarter that we discover. The firm is delighted with increased revenue thanks to contributions from NBA 2K22, NBA 2K21, GTA 5, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online, Borderlands 3, Civilization 6 and mobile games Two Dots and Dragon City. On the other hand, its profits collapsed. In question: the cancellation of a big unannounced game, which led to a depreciation of 45 million euros. Take-Two does not specify which game it is it, but according to journalist Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, it would be a project called Volt developed by Hangar 13 (Mafia 3). This new license would have been rebooted several times since the start of its production in 2017 and would therefore never have found the right formula. According to Kotaku, it was about a TPS live service in the vein of Destiny.

The other important information in this report is the postponement of the tactical game Marvel's Midnight Suns from Firaxis (XCOM, Civilization) and 2K Games. First scheduled for next March, it is now expected in the second half of 2022. Take-Two can still count on the releases of GTA Trilogy (November 11), OlliOlli World (early 2022), GTA V / GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series (March 2022), WWE 2K22 (March 2022) and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands (March 2022) to complete its fiscal year. Call of Duty: here are the novelties of season 4 of Modern Warfare and Warzone

Did you successfully install the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare update and now have access to season 4 content from the popular Infinity Ward FPS? You will be rewarded, since several novelties are emerging!

Three new maps for the multiplayer component are notably available in Modern Warfare since the launch of the fourth season.

Zhokov Scrapyard, a small field of ruins originally published in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Barakett Promenade, inspired by the area of the same name in Warzone, for Ground War mode

Trench, a series of trenches, intended for Gunfight mode

From day one, we can also get our hands on two new weapons, the SMG Fennec and the assault rifle CR-56 AMAX, by obtaining the "battle pass". In doing so, players will also unlock an operator (highly anticipated), Captain Price.

Later in the season, two more characters, Gaz and Roze, will also appear in Modern Warfare, along with an additional multiplayer map, Cheshire Park, and three new game modes: All or Nothing, One in the Chamber and Team Defender.

Changes for Warzone too
Obviously, season 4 will also bring its share of novelties in the "battle royale" pendant of Modern Warfare, Warzone.

A new game mode, called Rumble, will among other things give rise to a huge battle between two teams of 50 soldiers.

Special events will also now disrupt Warzone games, which could lead in particular to the reappearance of all eliminated players, to huge temporary discounts on the purchase of in-game items or to the surprise arrival, above Verdansk, from a helicopter filled with provisions. Interesting!

In addition, additional modes will land a little later during the season in the free title.

Note that Season 4 of Modern Warfare and Warzone was launched on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, after a postponement of almost a week.

Hitman 3: the last part of the trilogy will be more "mature, serious and dark"

Announced for the beginning of 2021, Hitman 3 will close the eponymous trilogy, launched in an episodic format in 2016, with a more "mature, serious and somber" tone.

This is what the studio behind the franchise, IO Interactive, announced Thursday morning in a web presentation with community developer Clemens Koch and community manager Travis Barbour.

The pair argued that if Hitman, released in 2016, had a more "professional" tone, and if the second installment, released two years later, focused a little more on exploded and entertaining content, Hitman 3 will offer a version Agent 47's more mature.

The way of delivering the story in this new adventure should also be slightly different. So, instead of using only the cutscenes to advance the storyline, Hitman 3 will integrate elements of the story directly into the gameplay. We can therefore expect a direction that will look a bit more like Absolution on this side.

However, the game will continue to offer levels in the form of huge sandboxes offering different ways to deal with its targets, confirmed Koch and Barbour.

On this subject, it will be possible - on the model of what we offered in Hitman 2 - to integrate directly into the third component the missions of the two previous titles, as well as its own progression.

Hitman 3 will be released in January 2021 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.

The Last of Us Part 2: a petition to have the story of the game redone (Is it that bad) ?

No, you're not on The Onion. Someone really started a Change.org petition asking Naughty Dog to rewrite the story of Last of Us Part II.

Launching The Last of Us Part II was anything but simple. Leaks circulated everywhere on the web before the release, revealing key events that angered several Internet users. For some players, the reasonable response was, of course, to harass the Naughty Dog teams, to disclose the game and the review-bomb on Metacritic as soon as it was released on June 19, 2020. * Please note before clicking on links, be warned : there are disclosers!

Obviously, this was not enough: Naughty Dog must now return to square one and redo the story, if we rely on a Change.org petition which has already accumulated more than 12,000 signatures. To avoid disclosing the game, we will omit some details in the quotes:

"The Last of Us Part 2 delivered excellent gameplay, good graphics and good mechanics, but the story is extremely bad", can be read in the description of the petition. "We need a remake of the game, because it disrespected all the fans who waited 7 years for the sequel." A small request, what.

"All we wanted was a sequel to Joel and Ellie," said a signatory. "Not a lesbian story".

"I find it funny that everyone hates this game and I want to see the developers suffer," said another visibly balanced signatory.

Neil Druckmann, the creator of the series, did not pay attention to the petition on Twitter. Thanks to PlayStation Lifestyle for the discovery.
